NAMING

Author:
Kathi Wolfe

I wasn’t singing the body electric.
Hearing the doctor say
distraction fracture
is an injury
that distracts from real pain,

I asked the gods
of Percocet and punctured ears,
If i’d ever know what hit me.
if I didn’t know if I was an I,
i wondered, shuttering my eyes
against broken shooting stars,
would I think, would I be an “I am”?
Still, this one thing I knew,
even in this nameless void,
I wanted to name myself.
